As the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, Damascus has world-wide importance that goes way beyond its present role as capital of Syria and the city was declared a Cultural World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979. The many cultures associated with the city are reflected in the architecture; the Citadel erected by the Seljuks in 1078 A.D. ; the Ommayad Mosque, built in 705 A.D. when Damascus was the capital of the Arab Islamic Empire; ruins of Roman Temples and the Roman Wall with its seven gates, Corinthian columns and triumphal arches.
It was on the road to Damascus that St. Paul saw the vision that converted him to Christianity. Trade routes converged here and with an exotic atmosphere all their own; the Souqs of Damascus still sell craftwork of all kinds, spices, perfumes, embroidered cloths, leatherware, sweets and ice cream.
Visitors wishing to truly experience the life of this historic city will find boutique hotels hidden among the ancient streets; each one set in ancient buildings, often former merchant`s houses, arranged in the traditional way around a calm, central courtyard, lovingly restored to their former magnificence and furnished authentically, yet with all the comforts of modern living.
Perhaps the most magnificent example is the Talisman 1, an old Jewish palace opulently restored, with two courtyards and outdoor swimming pool. Each of the 17 rooms or suites is uniquely decorated and the five star accommodation includes king size bed, plasma TV, mini bar, central heating, air conditioning, wi fi connection and telephone.
Another hotel with a palatial feel is the five star Al Pasha, formed from three adjoining 18th century homes, just off the Via Recta where St. Paul had his vision. The three courtyards here are covered by retractable transparent ceilings. Leisure facilities include cardiovascular exercise equipment, sauna and Jacuzzi.
Sister hotel to Talisman 1, Talisman 2, has 12 sumptuous rooms and suites and a unique private apartment with living room, bedroom, private kitchen and private open courtyard.
More modest but utterly charming, is the nine-room, three star, Hanania, close to Hanania Church. Accommodation is arranged on three floors with rooms enhanced by artworks and an upper terrace offering views of the Damascene skyline against the backdrop of Qasioun Mountain.
Finally, the Antique Khan with eight rooms including 3 suites is a newly renovated, 16th century house with mosaic-floored courtyard and atrium which is within walking distance of most major sites.
The narrow streets of Old Damascus are not suitable for vehicles, but most hotels offer transfer to and from the airport so no need to worry about cheap car rental Faro.
